The grape of this D.O., Tinta de Toro, gives a superb red wine, full of body, good tannin and high alcohol. A winner for those in search of rounded fat wines. These wines will be perfect for a roast, game and for mature cheeses.
Nobody will deny that Toro reds, found in the province of Zamora, are full of personality and have been boosted by the international popularity of high alcohol wines. The climate of this D.O. is very continental with hot, dry summers and very cold winters, which are also quite dry.
White Wines
The white wines of this region are mostly produced with the
Malvasia grape. They have a light yellow – green colour
with an intense rustic aroma. Once in the pallet the wine
has a slight bitter after taste.
Rose Wines
To produce this variety of rose, Toro uses either Tinta de Toro or Grenache and in some cases the wine producers will
mix both varieties together for a blended taste. In general
they have a red-pink colour with notes of ripe red fruits.
They are meaty and wholesome.
Red Wines
Without a doubt, the red wines are the main attraction
of this D.O. They have the strength of the local grape, Tinta
del Pais, and are very high in alcohol content, 13.5 to 14%.
When they are young, their colour is dark cherry with a touch
of violet. They are wines of good intensity at the nose and
with aromas of blackberry and ripe dark fruits. They are tasty
and meaty making them last long in the palate. When the wine
is aged in wood barrels, they maintain their characteristics
and gain those of the softness of the oak.
