In the middle of one of the historical regions of Catalan wine, this D.O., in the past few years, has shown a fundamental push towards quality wines which, no doubt, are finding their place in the world market. Similar to those from their neighbours of Priorat and Montsant, Terra Alta offers aromatic reds which are a perfect match for mountain or country kitchen, and whites with great personality, very often barrel fermented. We believe that the wines of new style from this area are very promising and they definitely offer superb value for money. Terra Alta has a small but very good offer of wines from which we, in our opinion, have selected the best.

Wine region's location

Terra Alta can be found in the province of Tarragona. Situated on a plain 400 meters above sea level, this is the most westerly wine area of Catalonia. The area comprises 12 different municipalities, over an extension of 746 km2. The vines grow mostly in small parcels of land and the growers in most cases supply the coops. The main wine producing centres of the area are Gandesa and Batea and there is where we can find most of the producers

Wine characteristics

White Wines
In most cases, produced from white Grenache as a base but in some cases it is blended with other white varieties. They are of Mediterranean character with a vivid yellow colour and aromas of ripe white fruits and wild herbs. They are soft to the palate and a good after taste.

Rose Wines
Not a very important sector in this D.O. Produced mostly from Grenache they have the typical character of the grape, strawberry and raspberry aromas and flavours.

Red Wines
Mostly full bodied, a characteristic of the Grenache and Carignen grapes which are the main red grapes of the area. Typically they have a deep red colour, good aromas of ripe red and black berries with a very long after taste.
