Navaldar 2007

Tempranillo means 'early ripener' in Spanish and you'd have to get up very early indeed to find one that's better value than this. It may be young, but it has the heart and soul of classic Rioja, with its ruby red colour, ripe berry flavours and good finish. Its sheer drinkability makes it perfect for an informal roast lamb Sunday lunch or for sharing with friends on a summer's evening outdoors.

Sur 2005

Six months in American oak barrels give extra personality to this interesting blend of Grenache Graciano and Merlot. A bright intense red. The Grenache and Merlot deliver plenty of red fruit oomph, with the delicately scented Graciano largely responsible for the floral overtones. Look out for hints of vanilla and cocoa too. It's well-balanced, oily and ample in the mouth, yet lively and joyful (and the low cost will bring a smile to your lips too).

Coto de Hayas Crianza 2003 - 2004

We all like a red from time to time that doesn't demand too much attention and this is the one. A good solid red, a Crianza of Grenache, old vines and Tempranillo that's just so easy to enjoy. The strength of Centenial Grenache is toned down with Tempranillo to give an amazing result. Aromas of red fruits, cinnamon and leather; wonderful taste and long aftertaste. And the price? Even easier to swallow.

Almodi 2007

A superb blend, dominated by Grenache, with Syrah and Carignan offering extra depth and complexity. Mellow and full bodied with clean aromas of raspberry, blackberry and other dark fruits, backed by notes of liquorice and black pepper (that's the Syrah for you). Intensely purple, mellow and full-bodied, with a long jammy aftertaste. Try with venison, beef, strong stews - you can throw almost anything at it (except money - it's surprisingly affordable). Only 7,000 bottles were produced in 2007, and this is more than a match for the popular 2003 vintage.

Sierra Cantabria 2005

This wine is a masterpiece. Young, yet with all the classic notes of Rioja, it comes from the Eguren family who own one of the most prestigious wineries in the region between the River Ebro and the Sierra Cantabria mountain range. This wonderful creation is Tempranillo with a touch of Graciano, using only the best, hand-picked grapes. Lots of aromas and flavour and a long and pleasant aftertaste. Fabulous.

Castillo de Luzon 2001

A full bodied wine, ripe red fruits with an edge of oak. Long after taste. Quite a wine.

Limited production, numbered bottles. This is a classic Monastrell. Strong, aromatic and powerfull. Very long after taste, just like a good Monastrell should be!
