Out of all the wine making areas in Spain, Priorat takes all the prizes for making it to the top wine bracket with a real bang. The reds of this D.O. are simply stunning and highly regarded throughout the world. When you are looking for that very special red for the very special occasion a Priorat red is what you want.
This D.O. is situated in the province of Tarragona. The most distinctive element of this D.O. is the constitution of its soil, of volcanic mixture that is covered by small pieces of gold coloured slate, known as Licorella, which gives the wines a very special mineral like character. This uniqueness has placed the wines of this D.O. in the spot light and they are sought after, not only in Spain but the world over. The climate is temperate and dry with Mediterranean influence counteracted by dry north winds.
White Wines
Produced mostly with Macabeo and White Grenache. Light yellow
in colour with aromas of white fruits and wild herbs. Very
pleasant to the palate, with a clear Mediterranean note.
Rose Wines
Only a few Rose wines are produced in this region. In most
cases they are warm and with strong hints of ripe red berries
leading to a very nice taste.
Red Wines
Red wine is the main attraction of the region. In general
they are produced with Grenache and Carignen grapes, however
in some cases they are combined with small quantities of foreign
varieties. This makes for a very intense and dark red colour
with a complex aroma. You will be able to clearly see notes
of very ripe red fruits and minerals which makes the wine
meaty and warm.
