Jumilla is in the southeast of Spain, astride the provinces
of Murcia and Albacete. When Rioja was not even a wine area,
at least in the strict sense of the word, Jumilla was the benchmark for the typical wine consumed
in Spain. Perhaps it lacked Rioja’s finesse, but it
was a wine in which many Spaniards felt they could rely. The
climate in Jumilla is continental (winters of – 4c and
summers of – 41c) mitigated by the occasional influence
of Mediterranean winds.
The queen grape here is the indigenous and extremely interesting
Monastrell which gives a very pleasant wine with bright colour
and aromas of crystallised fruits.
White Wines
Generally, the white wines of this D.O. are for the most part
produced with Macabeo, They have a bright yellow colour with
a moderate fruity taste. They are well balanced and very expressive
in taste.
Rose Wines
Not many Roses are produced in this area. However they are
of a lovely quality. Salmon-pink in colour with a very fruity
aroma that shows the mixed red berries. All this adds up to
a soft yet tasty boquet.
Red Wines
The star wines of this D.O. Based on the Monastrell grape,
these wines come with a lot of colour, an intense flavour
and aromas of ripe black fruits. They are strong wines with
excellent tannin, meaty and tasty.
