One of our favourite D.O.’s. Small but with superb wines, perhaps not the bargain we some times look for but you certainly get your money’s worth for quality. It is difficult to point out reds, whites or roses as leading the way as they are all very good and the upper range are simply outstanding. The reds will marry very well with red meats, specially roast beef or a good fillet or steak. The roses will suit chicken or pork and the whites will also go well with white meats and, of course, fish, preferably if it is cooked with sauce.
In the valley of the river Segre, in the province of Lerida (Catalonia), this D.O. enjoys a Continental climate, rather dry, with extreme temperatures which will go up to 35 to 40C during the summer and down to minus 5 to 10C in the winter. The wines can be classed as Mediterranean, generally soft but with a lot of the character of ripe red fruits and a superb balsamic aroma. This D.O. is presently one of the trendiest amongst Spanish wine lovers.
White Wines
Those made out of the traditional grapes (Macabeo,
Perellada, Xarel-lo) are light, fruity, fresh and with a good
acidity balance. On the other hand the Chardonay’s,
both young or barrel fermented are the perfect sample of the
Mediterranean interpretation of this variety.
Rose Wines
Made with Tempranillo, Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon
these wines are light red in colour with a good fruity character
that is fresh and expresses perfectly the personality of the
grape used in each instance.
Red Wines
They are wines of Mediterranean character, either
of one only variety or with a slight topping of foreign grapes
like Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot. In general, they are warm
with a good expression of ripe fruits. Some develop a superb
balsamic aroma. Warm and very tasty in the mouth.
