New kid in the block! We like the young red wines from this D.O. very much. These are the wines you want for that grilled steak or spiced risotto. When well selected, as we do, superb value for your money.

Wine region's location

Bierzo is located in the province of Leon, in the north west of Spain and bordering with Galicia. Situated between the Cantabric and Cebrero mountains ranges and the Sil river, this D.O. has recently caught the attention of some of the most famous wine makers such as Antonio Palacios. Although the production of wine in the area has been on going for a very long time, it is only in the last ten years that wines from the Bierzo area have gained wide spread recognition. All red wines produced in the area must have a minimum 70% on Mencia Grape, being the variety on which this D.O. is based.

Wine characteristics

White Wines
In general, the white wines from this area are of a pale yellow colour leading to a light, fresh and fruity taste. For a stronger taste those elaborated with Godello Grape should be your choice.

Rose Wines
For a rose wine to have a D.O. from Bierzo the wine must have at least 50% Mencia Grape. This gives this wine a very pinkish colour and a typical aroma of raspberries and strawberries.

Red Wines
The Bierzo is best know for its red wines. Their wines are young in character with a light and dry taste. As with the other wines from the region, they are fruity with strong strawberry and blackberry accents.
