Spanish Wine Regions > Bajo Aragon

This area is trying very hard to bring back to present days their wealth of wines and reputation which they enjoyed as far back as the XVI and XVII centuries, when their wines were exported from the neighbouring Mediterranean ports to the main markets of Europe. Bajo Aragon wines, rich and full bodied, are produced mostly from red and white Grenache, in most instances from centennial wines, with low yield but very high alcohol and tannins. The reds are rich, full of red berries and with long after taste. Their Grenache whites are quite powerful, ideal for a fish casserole or a white meat dish. In all cases, good value for money.

Wine region's location

Bajo Aragon is a natural region, located in the southern area of the province of Teruel, Aragon, and bordering with another very famous wine area, Terra Alta. The area spans from the south of the river Ebro, with the rivers Guadalope and Matarrana to the sides and the Iberian Mountains to the north. With altitudes ranging from 450 to 850 meters above sea level, an extreme climate, abundant hours of sun and a soil rich in minerals makes this a superior location for the production of good down to earth wines.

Wine characteristics

White Wines
Bajo Aragon wines are mostly produced from white Grenache. Some times we can see a low blend of Chardonnay or Macabeo. They are strong and full bodied; especially those which have been barrel fermented for a short period, creating an intense flavour of fruits with a very interesting border of oak.

Red Wines
For reds, this is a predominantly Grenache region. The red wines here offer all the richness of the typical Grenache flavours, good old ripe red and black fruits. These reds are very tasty, full bodied and with a very long after taste. Excellent with casseroles, stews and all types of red meats.
